Character Ed Lesson- September - Responsibility Week 2 Date: 9.26.17 OVERVIEW & PURPOSE -Focus: How am I showing responsibility? How do my words/actions affect others?
MATERIALS NEEDED 1. Playing cards 2.Scenario cards
Introduction (1 minute): Explain the objective/purpose Today we are going to talk about making responsible choices when we have made mistakes. We will also reflect how we are doing and ways we can improve in the area of responsibility.
Activity #1 (7 minutes): Responsible people admit when they have made a mistake. They do what they can to apologize or fix their mistake and make sure it does not happen again. They do not make excuses or blame others.
Divide students up by giving each student a playing card. Stack the deck so that the groups will be evenly divided by suit. Have groups form in corners of the room by their suit.
Each group will get a dilemma they will need to discuss ( if there is enough time they can do this as a role play)
Hearts and Diamonds, you will work on this scenario. (feel free to use a your own dilema) You and a few friends cut through some yards on your way home from playing football in the park. You start tossing a ball back and forth to each other. Suddenly, the ball goes sailing through a neighbor's window. What do you do? Hearts will give one example of a response in which they are not responsible for their actions ( blaming or excuses or avoiding). Diamonds will give an example of a response that shows accountability or taking responsibility for your actions.
Clubs and spades you will work on this scenario. You have a big project due tomorrow. The assignment was given two weeks ago, and your teacher has been checking every other day to make sure that everyone is working on it. You’ve reported that you’ve chosen your topic and have begun to work on it, but you really haven't. This project will count toward most of your grade, and there is no way you will finish it in one night. What wiil you do? Clubs will give one example of a response in which they are not responsible for their actions ( blaming or excuses or avoiding). Spades will give an example of a response that shows accountability or taking responsibility for your actions.
Closure Questions (2 minutes):
What are the benefits of being responsible?
How can a responsible response to a mistake build trust and respect from others?
What is one way you can work on being more responsible? Write it down on your character commitment page in your binder.
Transition Next month we will be talking about respect.
