January - Tolerance Week 1 Date: 1.9.18 OVERVIEW & PURPOSE - Focus: What is tolerance? Why is tolerance important? Martin Luther King, Jr. dreamed of a world more tolerant than the one he lived in. MATERIALS NEEDED
Introduction (1 minute): During the month of January, we will be exploring the character traits of tolerance,service, empathy and acceptance.
Activity #1(7 minutes): Read the Martin Luther King, Jr. sentence at the top of this lesson and ask the question, “What is tolerance?” Spend a few minutes asking students to share what they think when they hear the word “tolerance”. View the YouTube video on tolerance (2:02)
Closure Questions (5-10 minutes):
Did this video change your perception of the meaning of tolerance?
Why is having tolerance an important quality to have?
What are some things we can do to show tolerance of others?
Read the “Tolerance” poster and display it in your advisory room during January. Advisory Challenge: This week I challenge you to say “hi” to at least 5 people you don’t know.
