November - Gratitude Week 2 Date: 11.21.17 OVERVIEW & PURPOSE -Focus: How am I showing gratitude? How do my words/actions affect others?
MATERIALS NEEDED1. Thank you card materials (Can be in the form of paper, notecards, bulletin board paper. Be creative!)
Introduction (1 minute): Remind students of the last gratitude lesson: -Talked about gratitude and why it is important -We watched a YouTube video about how gratitude affects others’ happiness, as well as our own
Introduce today’s focus: -Reflect on how each of us shows gratitude and how our words and actions affect others -Show gratitude to another person
Activity #1(7 minutes): Have students select their supplies to create a note of gratitude or thanks. Students should be creative in how they choose to do that based on the materials you provide them with. The whole focus of the students creating the card is to pick someone they feel compelled to share their appreciation for. Discourage students from picking someone else in the group but to pick someone who may not know they are appreciated. Examples could be in the school: teachers, paras, school resource officer, janitors, cafeteria workers, support staff, admin; at home: parents, grandparents, uncles/aunts or in the community: pastor or religious leader, police officers, firemen, coaches etc. Encourage students to be genuine in their words of appreciation. Let students know they are expected to give their note of thanks to the person in order for it to have an impact.
Closure Questions (2 minutes):
How did you pick who to write your thank you to?
How did it feel to tell someone you are grateful for them? Did it feel good, awkward, uncomfortable, rewarding? -- It is okay to let students know that sometimes it feels awkward or vulnerable to say thank you.
What ways do you think you can use your words and actions for good in our school, your home and community?
Transition Remind students to give their thank yous to the person it was written to. Encourage students to remember the power of gratitude and saying “thank you” to others. That our words and actions can affect others and us too!
