October - Respect Week 3 Date: 10.31.17 OVERVIEW & PURPOSE -Focus: What can I do to make a difference in the world around me? TSWBAT: ·Develop respect for individual differences in people. ·Distinguish between respectful and disrespectful behavior. MATERIALS NEEDED1. 2.
Introduction (1 minute):
·Pair/Share: What are some of the reasons people show disrespect for others? Ask volunteers to share responses with the whole class.
Activity #1(7 minutes): ·Facilitate a group discussion using the following guiding questions: oWhat role do you think differences play in how people respect or disrespect others? oWhy is acceptance of differences not always an easy thing? oDo you have to like a person or their way of life to be respectful, or can you respect someone even if you don’t particularly care for him or her? oWhat are some common signs of disrespect that you have seen in people here at school? oWhat do you like the most about the way people treat each other here at school? What do you dislike the most? oOften people make assumptions that aren’t necessarily true about other people. A stereotype is a mental image or opinion formed in advance about a person or particular group of people. It’s putting labels on people, forgetting that everyone is different. Has there ever been a time when someone made an assumption about you, or you made an assumption about someone else? What does this situation have to do with respect? oImagine if you and your family moved to a place where the people were very different from you. How would you feel on the first day of school? How would you want people to treat you? oRespect: Start the Ripple (10 min.) oBefore starting the video, distribute the video activity sheet. While watching the video students should write down 3 things in the video that are meaningful to them. When the video has ended, they should identify which of the 3 was the most meaningful. Ask for volunteers to share their most meaningful one with the class.
Closure Questions (2 minutes):
Transition Think about your thoughts, words and actions and how they are affecting others. Are you thoughts about yourself kind (self-respect). Are your words and actions toward others respectful? What kind of ripple effect do you have on the people around you?
